Son of Florence L. Poole, of Honeylands, North Weston, Portishead.
Commemorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial, Reference 29
SS Saxon was on a voyage from Odde, Denmark to Leith with a cargo of carbide. It was sunk by a torpedo from submarine U-105 on 7th May 1918, 83 miles ESE of Fair Isle. 22 lives were lost.

Adams, Thomas Francis

Son of Edward and Elizabeth Jane Adams, of Bitteswell, Rugby.
He lived at Beachcliff overlooking the Severn Estuary with his sister and brother-in-law.
Commemorated at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Reference: Panel 5.
Died at the Ypres Salient which was formed by British, French, Canadian and Belgian units against a German advance during the 1914 race to the sea. Ypres and the corner around Veurne were saved from occupation, but this also led to the beginning of trench warfare as both sides dug in.

Atwell, Leslie Victor

Son of James and Mary Ann Atwell.
Husband of Annie Atwell of Dartington, South Road, Portishead.
Commemorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial, Reference: 29.
HMS Patia was an armed merchant cruiser. It was torpedoed by a German Submarine UC-49 and sank in the Bristol Channel 25 miles west of Hartland Point. 16 members of the crew died.

Bailey, Albert Charles

Son of William John and Emily Maria Bailey, of Clapton, Portishead.
Commemorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Reference: 9
HMS Bayano, built in 1913, was originally a banana boat for the Elders & Fyffes line. At the outbreak of World War 1, it was drafted into the Royal Navy on 21 November 1914 as an armed merchant auxiliary cruiser. On 11 March 1915, it was torpedoed by submarine SM U-27 and sank within minutes killing around 200 of its crew. Twenty-six survivors were pulled from the water.

Son of Frances and William and husband of Alice Maud (born Powell) of Portishead.
Buried at Osmondwall Cemetery, South Walls, Island of Hoy, Orkney. Reference B 22.
HMS Bellona was a Boadicea-class scout cruiser assigned to the 1st Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet

in Scapa Flow at the start of World War 1.
He contracted enteric fever and died in Orkney.

Bendrey, Ronald Wall

Son of James Thomas and Annie M. H. Bendrey, of "Glenlow," Down Rd., Portishead.
Native of Hanley, Staffs, England.

Bessant, Ernest Gilbert

He lived with his mother and six siblings at Oxford

Terrace in North Westonand had worked as a labourer on Portishead Docks.

He died at Ypres. Cabin Hill Cemetery.

Bound, Thomas Samuel

6 April 1916, age 26.
21442, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
Son of Thomas and Rosina Bound formerly of Bristol Road, Portishead.
When he was a child, he lived in the Children's Home on West Hill. He had worked as a farm labourer and gardener.
Commemorated at Basra Memorial, Iraq 12977837 Reference: Panel 26 and 63. This memorial has been moved to a desert site.
He died at Basra,Iraq.

Bridgman, Wilfred

2 June 1915, age 21.
Private 642, North Somerset Yeomanry.
Son of Mr. W. P. and Mrs. C. H. Bridgman, of West View, West Hill, Portishead.
He lived at Grange Farm in the High Street.
Commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium Reference:Panel 5.

His body was not recovered.

Brown, Alfred Ernest

28 September 1918, age 20.
Private 8571 Served in the Somerset Light Infantry and then the Machine Gun Corps.
Son of Samuel John and Jane Eliza Brown of Clevedon Road, North Weston.
Buried at Oxford Road Cemetery, Belgium. Reference IV.F.6.

Bryant, Arthur Reginald

1 July 1916, age 19.
Private 26561, 103rd Coy., Machine Gun Corps (Infantry).
Only son of James Thomas and Sarah Ann Bryant, of The Cottage, High St., Portishead near to the White Cot Dairy.
Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, France. Reference: Pier and Face 5C and 12C.
He had joined the Somerset Light Infantry but later became a machine gunner. He lost his life on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Carritt, Harry William M.C.

Carritt, Harry William M.C.

8 July 1916, age 29.
Captain 2nd Battalion., Northamptonshire Regiment.
He had lived at Orwell Lodge, Portishead.
Entered the army from the Bristol University OTC.
He was killed at the Battle of the Somme and was awarded the Military Cross posthumously. He was wounded by a shell explosion, initially surviving but dying soon after. His body was not recovered from the battlefield.
He had previously served as a missionary in China. His father was the minister at the Congregational Church in Battery Road where a brass plaque recorded Harry Carritt's act of bravery.

His mother, Emma Gooding Chapman, lived at Oldfield Cottage on West Hill.

Eldest son of Annie and Arthur Coombs of North Weston. He lived at Grange Cottage, High Street.
He had volunteered for service in the Royal Naval Division after attending a recruitment meeting in Portishead.
Commemorated at the Helles Memorial, Turkey. Reference: Panel 8 to 16.

He was killed in action east of Achi Baba Nullah, Gallipoli. He has no known grave.

Crees, Reginald Seymour

He had joined the Prince Albert's Division of the Somerset Light Infantry.

Buried at Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Canada Reference: Plot: Sec. 17.4083.
It is possible he was discharged from the army and moved to Canada where he died of a weak heart.

Fifth son of charles E J Esdaile and Marion M Esdaile of Cothelstone, Taunton.

One of eleven children, he attended Spencer's School, Portishead and Rugby.
Enlisted in the Public Schools Bn. 1914. Also served in Italy.

Frankham, William George

Son of William and Mary Jane Frankham. Husband of Irene Maud Jones (formerly Frankham), of 1, Baily Glass, Twynyrodyn, Merthyr Tydvil. Native of Portishead.

Killed in action in Palestine.

Goulden, Frederick Charles

28 March 1915, age 49.

Husband of Florence Helena Goulden, of Crossgate, Bishop's Teignton, Devon, previously of St Denis (now no.26) Channel View Crescent, Portishead (see entry Gill in WW2).
Buried at Baltimore (Tullagh) Graveyard, County Cork, Ireland. Reference: North of ruins.

He was in charge of about 800 German prisoners of war on board the SS Orabasi. On his return to Lagos on board SS Falaba, the ship was sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland. Captain Goulden was one of 104 people who died that day.

Killed in action at Passchendaele.
[There is some uncertainty about the addresses of the Gouldens. It seems most likely that the family home was St Denis (now no.26) Channel View Crescent (see entry Gill in WW2) until some time between 1914 and 1918, when Florence and her children moved to Taswell Lodge (with short stays at Avon Dale and Bishop's Teignton during the war years?). From the dates it seems unlikely that her husband Capt Frederick ever lived at Taswell Lodge

Son of Alice Helena Hobbs (born Stokes) of High Street, Portishead and the late George Hobbs. Born at Cromhall, Glos.
Commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial, London.
The hospital ship was torpedoed by a German submarine U-86, 116 miles west of Fastnet. The Germans tried to kill all the survivors to eliminate witnesses to their mistake.

His name was probably Edward. He was invalided out of the Navy in May 1915 and died the following month.

At age of 18, he was lodging in Ashton Gate with the family of his future wife and traveling to work as a labourer in a motor spirit works in Portishead.

Jackson, Charles Bennett

Son of John Bennett Jackson, of Portishead, who was a training instructor on board TS Formidable.
He lived with the Searle family and worked as a shipping clerk in Bristol Docks.
He was one of the first local men to join up at the outbreak of war.

Died at Muree, India (now Pakistan). from cardiac failure due to an accidental overdose of Chloral.

Lawrence, Ernest William

Died in Malta. HMS Caesar was a pre-Dreadnought 1st class battleship. It was built in 1896, survived the war and was decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1921.

Died at sea near Italy. The Royal Navy Roll of Honour gives the reason as illness.
HMS Gloucester played a minor role in the Battle of Jutland and later served mostly in the Adriatic. It survived the war and was sold for scrap to Thos. W. Ward of Portishead on 9 May 1921.

He was a Physical Training Instructor and the National Nautical School, Portishead. He served in the Boxer Rebellion (China, 1900). Awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

He was born in Portishead in 1892.

Mitchell, Austin Horace Ormond

His Family lived in Roath Road, Portishead.
Husband of A. E. Mitchell, of 37, Westover Rd., Portsmouth.
Commemorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Reference 21.
The battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary was sunk by gunfire at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. 1266 of the ship's company died with only 9 survivors.

Son of the late Harry and Jane North. Born at Corsham, Wilts.
Husband of Prudence Fanny North (born Richards), of 2, Roath Rd., Portishead.
Commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial, London.
SS Kalibia was a defensively-armed British Merchant Ship. On the 30th November 1917 when 29 miles SW from the Lizard, Cornwall she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by submarine UB-80. 25 lives were lost. The vessel was on route from Norfolk, Va. to Bordeaux with a cargo of steel billets.

Son of the late Lewis and Mary Ann Picton, of Portishead, who had run the Post Office in the High Street for many years.
Husband of Ethel Picton, of 17 Burlington Rd., Redland, Bristol.

Killed in action at Gallipoli.

Pitman, Frederick

16 August 1915, age 27.
Private Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Son of Mrs Emily Pitman of 37 Alfred Street, Weston-super-Mare and worked as a baker for the local Co-op.
Commemorated at Helles Monument, Turkey. Reference: Panel 56.
Killed in action at Gallipoli. His death was witnessed by a fellow Portishead man, Private W G Holder. He was shot in the head and died of his wounds while fighting in the Dardanelles.

Medical Officer on H.M.S. Iris II during raid on Zeebrugge. On 23 April 1918. The Zeebrugge raid was an attempt by the Royal Navy to block the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebrugge. The British intended to sink obsolete ships in the canal entrance to prevent German submarines and other vessels from leaving port. It was only partially successful. He was awarded the MC for tending the wounded under fire in most adverse conditions. Wikipedia has an extensive article and mentions the Iris II.

Husband of Nellie Rendle (born Curtis), of 2, Rock House, Victoria Square, Portishead. They were married in March 1918.
He previously lived at St Hilda's, Roath Road and had been a member of the clerical staff at Portishead Docks.
He had joined the Glo'sters shortly after the outbreak of war and was twice wounded in action.
He was awarded a commission and returned to France earlier in 1918.

His body was not recovered.

Commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial, London.
After sailing from Avonmouth, HMS Royal Edward was torpedoed by a German Submarine in the Mediterranean Sea and sank in six minutes. More than 800 lives were lost.
The ship was carrying troops from England to take part in the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign.

Smith, Gaius Edward

Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Warry Smith of 6 Clevedon Road, Portishead.
He had attended St. Peter's School. Described as a handsome boy with blonde hair.
Commemorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Reference: 2
HMS Monmouth was sunk at the Battle of Coronel. There were no survivors from the ship's company of 735; seas were too rough to attempt a rescue.
He was one of the crew of West Country men on H.M.S. Monmouth which, with H.M.S. Good Hope was sunk in the Pacific ocean by a German submarine.

After his death, his wife moved the family to 21, Downleaze, Stoke Bishop, Bristol.

He had been a career soldier until his retirement in 1912 but he rejoined his regiment on the outbreak of war. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and received the D.S.O. for conspicuous gallantry. He died shortly after his return to Ypres from a period of convalescence at home following an attack of trench fever.

He had worked as a waiter at the Grand Hotel in Bristol before joining the Grenadier Guards. He died, aged 19, exactly one month after Britain's entry into the war, in an attack as the men emerged from a wood near Vivieres, France.
