Town Twinning
Portishead is twinned with the Dutch town of Den Dungen and the German town of Schweich.
The aim is to promote visits to and from Den Dungen and Schweich and to encourage the development of personal contacts. By doing Portishead Twinning Association wish to broaden the mutual understanding of the cultural, recreational and social activities of Portishead and our twin towns.
How is the Twinning Association funded?
Portishead Twinning Association is self-financing, raising funds from membership and social events throughout the year.
How can you get involved?
If you would like to get involved, you can become a Twinning Association Member for an annual fee of £15. Membership is open to anyone living in or near Portishead.
Den Dungen - The Netherlands
Den Dungen is a small town of approximately 8,000 inhabitants about 3 miles from the attractive city of s'Hertogenbosch, capital of the Province of North Brabant. Dating back to the 11th Century, historic "Den Bosch" is a bustling, modern city full of interest and famed for its annual International Jazz Festival. Den Dungen itself serves a mainly agricultural community dominated by the church of St. Jacobus de Mede, in the town centre. The picturesque area, criss-crossed by many waterways offers a variety of opportunities for leisure and recreation such as fishing, cycling and walking. Den Dungen is 350 miles from Portishead.
V. G. Schweich – Germany
Schweich is the principal town in a municipality of some 20,000 people situated 6 miles from the Roman city of Trier. The area is famous for its excellent wines and locally produced cider "Fietz". Sitting on the banks of the River Mosel, as well as on the Romischen Weinstrasse (Roman wine route), Schweich is ideally located as a favourite tourist destination for cycling, walking and sailing.
