Portishead Town Council Stands Firm Against Parking Charges in Community Consultation

In response to widespread concerns voiced by residents, businesses, and local stakeholders, Portishead Town Council has adamantly opposed the imposition of parking charges in the town. The Council's stance comes after extensive consultation with a range of community members and thorough consideration of the potential impacts of parking management strategies.

The Council has unequivocally objected to the introduction of parking charges, citing the adverse effects they would have on the town's High Street businesses, Lake Grounds amenities, and the broader community. Through petitions and direct feedback, over 4,200 residents and stakeholders have expressed their concerns, highlighting the potential negative repercussions on local trade, volunteerism, and accessibility.

Key concerns raised by the Council and residents include:

  • Impact on Local Businesses: Charging for parking could severely affect trade on Portishead's High Street, already grappling with economic challenges. The potential downturn in business, especially for retailers and services reliant on foot traffic, poses a significant risk to the community's economic vitality.
  • Loss of Local Amenity: Charging for parking at the Lake Grounds, a cherished local asset, may deter visitors and impact the viability of community-run organisations and facilities. The potential reduction in footfall at the Portishead Lido and other amenities could undermine the town's recreational and social fabric.
  • Displacement Parking: Concerns abound regarding displacement parking in residential areas, exacerbating congestion and safety hazards for residents. Implementing charges without addressing residential parking needs first could compound existing challenges and inequities.

Although the Council recognises that this is an early-stage consultation, it has raised questions about the content and style of the consultation, highlighting numerous shortcomings in the process.

Additionally, concerns have been raised about the disproportionate impact of parking charges on vulnerable groups, including low-income individuals, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Portishead Town Council underscores the importance of preserving the town's character and supporting local businesses and community initiatives. Any parking management strategy must be thoroughly evaluated and designed in consultation with residents and stakeholders to ensure it aligns with the town's vision and values.
