Youth
Portishead has a wide variety of clubs and activities for young people in the town ranging from sports and adventure to art, dance and music. Many of the groups and activities can be found in the directory section of this website.
The town boasts one of the best youth centres in the country, which is in use daytime and evenings, seven days a week, with a youth club operating at least four evenings each week. With no funding from North Somerset Council, Portishead Town Council provides grant aid to support the centre, while profits from daytime use and fundraising activities also help fund its youth work.
Youth club sessions are run by qualified youth workers, along with centre staff and volunteers, providing a safe, supervised modern venue where young people can meet friends and socialise.
The young people can take part in a range of activities which include: football and netball on the outdoor court, music and dance in the dance studio and music room, they can run their own discos or play table tennis, table football, air hockey and pool. The media suite provides a number of computers for members’ use and the state of the art music video screens also provide entertainment. The coffee bar area is popular with those who don’t want to take part in organised activities and it is also a great place for the members to sit and plan some new activities they may have ideas for. There are often additional optional activities organised.
In addition to hosting the town’s youth club, with a main hall, separate dance studio, music recording studio, media suite, office space, life skills and conference room, the centre is home to many groups and organisations and to a community café, which is open to the general public and hosts lunch clubs for walkers, senior citizens and other organised groups.
