Helping businesses through the pandemic

News - 26 January 2021

From North Somerset Council's website

Businesses in North Somerset are being invited to join a business support webinar next week to find out more about the support available to them during the current pandemic.

North Somerset Council is running the webinar at 4pm on Thursday 28 January on its YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/PU2RXn3mqPw.

The session will be led by Cllrs Mark Canniford, executive member for business, economy and employment, and Ash Cartman, executive member for finance and performance, supported by council officers responsible for administering the various different grants businesses can apply for.

During the live broadcast there will be the opportunity for businesses to ask questions via Slido using #NSCbusiness.

"We really want local businesses to take part and ask any questions they may have," said Cllr Canniford. "However, if you're unable to participate in the live session it will still be really useful to watch back afterwards to find out more about the support available and how to access it."

In addition to the webinar, the council has set up a dedicated phone line - 01934 888 114 - and email address - [email protected] - for businesses negatively affected by Covid-19. The council's specialist team will help them identify which grants they are eligible for and how to claim those grants.

Among the grants available is the 'Closed Business Lockdown Payment' announced by the Government earlier this month where retail, hospitality and leisure businesses closed during the current lockdown are entitled to one-off top-up grants up to £9,000 to support them until the spring. Grants are:

  • £4,000 for businesses with a rateable value of £15,000 or under
  • £6,000 for businesses with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000
  • £9,000 for businesses with a rateable value of over £51,000.

The council has been awarded a further £16m to support local businesses via this new grant. It is now contacting businesses directly and anticipates making payments by the end of January.

On top of these grants the council is offering extra payments to hospitality businesses in North Somerset. Before Christmas it contacted over 300 pubs, restaurants and cafes setting out how to claim this additional funding, but so far only a third of those businesses have come forward to claim the payments.

Pubs and restaurants can claim £3,000 in total, paid at £1,000 per month for December, January and February. Cafes with between one and 10 employees can claim £500 for each of the three months, and cafes employing 11 or more people can claim £1,000 a month.

If you run a pub, café or restaurant and have not yet claimed these payments contact the council via the dedicated phone number or email address.

"I urge all businesses who have been adversely affected by the pandemic to contact us and we will help you access the grants you are entitled to," said Cllr Canniford. "I would much prefer the money we've been given by the Government stays in the local economy helping our local businesses rather than it go back to the Government."
